Note: This isn’t a sponsored post. I bought Facetheory skincare products like any regular customer shopping online.

I seem to spend my life trying out new skincare products, searching for the holy grail but never quite finding brands that live up to the hype. And I’ll preface this by cautioning you to be wary of any brand that promises miracle skincare cures overnight.

The less sexy truth of the matter is that skincare – just like diet or any other area of your health – is a long game. If you want long-term, sustainable results, it’s far more important that you simply get the basics right and commit to them every day.

So when I came across Facetheory, I’ll admit that despite the rave reviews, I was still a little sceptical. But with values I can get behind and a whole roster of credentials like B-Corp, vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, and shipped in sustainable packaging, I couldn’t help but get my hopes up just a little bit!

I’ve been following their basic skincare routine for a couple of months now. Here’s my honest Facetheory review.

Review Summary

After using Facetheory skincare for two months, I haven’t experienced any breakouts or irritation (rare with my sensitive skin!). It smells divine and leaves my skin feeling super soft. It’s great to find high-performing products that are natural and animal-friendly.

Facetheory Basic Skincare Routine Review

As you’ll know if you’ve read this post, I’m all about a minimal skincare routine that actually works. My three-step morning routine includes cleansing, moisturising and sunscreen. And my three-step night routine includes removing my makeup, cleansing and moisturising. As such, I felt that Facetheory’s basic skincare routine (consisting of just three products) would be the perfect choice for my needs.

Generally speaking, I really struggle to find products that agree with my dry, sensitive skin. This means that I often end up wasting money on products that I simply can’t use. So the fact that Facetheory was gentle enough to not break me out was already a win in itself. Whilst I can’t guarantee that this will be the case for you, hopefully this is a good sign!

After using these three products religiously for a couple of months (morning and night), I can genuinely say that my skin feels clearer and more hydrated, and my skin tone seems to have evened out slightly, meaning that I can go lighter on foundation. I’m also experiencing far fewer hormonal breakouts. So, if you’re looking for a simple and effective skincare routine you can stick to, I would absolutely recommend these three products – I’ll definitely be repurchasing.

That said, a little goes a long way, so I don’t think that’ll be for another month or two at least.

Facetheory Basic Skincare Routine review

1. Vitamin C Cream Cleanser

  • When to use: ☀️+🌙
  • How to use: Apply a pea-sized amount to damp skin, then rinse with warm water
  • Active ingredients:
    • Vitamin C: neutralises free radicals & protects against environmental damage
    • Glycerin: maintains skin’s moisture balance
    • Sweet almond oil: contains restorative acids
    • Avocado: high in antioxidants & fatty acids

Without a doubt, the cleanser has to be my favourite product out of the three. I accidentally opted for the Mandarin version (usually I would go unscented to be on the safe side), so when I first used it, I was a little worried about reacting because it is quite heavily scented.

The good news is – I didn’t! It’s honestly such a treat to be able to use this. If I could describe it, it smells like orange sweets (in a good way!). It comes in a lovely amber glass pot and you get plenty of it. Because it’s so refreshing to use, I’m finding it a lot easier to stick to my skincare routine. I’m also having no difficulties removing all of my makeup at the end of the day, including stubborn mascara.

2. Hylafecta 2% Hyaluronic Acid Serum

  • When to use: 🌙
  • How to use: After cleansing in the evening, apply 2-3 drops of product to damp face (can be used in the morning too, but I find overnight is plenty)
  • Active ingredients:
    •  Hyaluronic Acid: attracts & holds in moisture, boosting hydration & skin plumpness in all skin types
    • Pink Rock Rose Extract: rich in antioxidants that soothe inflammation & improve skin function

Whilst a serum isn’t a strict necessity in your skincare routine, as it was a part of the basic skincare bundle, I decided to give it a try.

And I’m so glad I did! In the past, I’ve found serums can be sticky and take a while to dry down, but this lightweight formula is really easy to apply. To make sure I’m not using more than I need, I apply a few drops to the back of my hand and then rub it into my skin.

As much as I like to keep things as simple as possible, this is truly a little luxury. I can tell when I’ve used this product because my skin feels so smooth in the morning – it’s like my dry skin literally drinks this stuff!

I’ve got into the habit of using this every night, even though I started by thinking I’d just use it occasionally. And I’ve still got about three-quarters of a bottle left, so it’s going to last for ages!

3. Amil-C Whip M5 SPF30

  • When to use: ☀️+🌙
  • How to use: Massage a small amount into skin with upward circular movements
  • Active ingredients:
    • Niacinamide: (aka Vitamin B3) helps to reduce the appearance of enlarged pores
    • Vitamin C: defends skin from free radicals & environmental damage
    • TINOSORB® S: a broad spectrum UV filter
    • Lactic Acid: helps to exfoliate skin
    • Vitamin E: a naturally derived fat-soluble vitamin that hydrates your skin

This whipped mousse moisturiser contains SPF30+, having all the hydrating effects of a good moisturiser whilst simultaneously protecting your skin against UV damage. The new and improved formula provides higher SPF protection, having increased from SPF 20 to 30 – thank you, Facetheory!

SPF is such an underrated aspect of skincare that has the biggest effect in the long term on ageing. So it’s really important to find a good SPF and use it every day.

Whilst typically I’d use a separate SPF, this SPF 30 formulation means that I’ve been able to cut out a step in my morning skincare routine. I also haven’t spotted any streaks or chalkiness like with other natural SPFs. My only niggle is that I wish the UVA protection was 5 stars. Oh, and that the pot was bigger! I’m definitely going to run out of this one first.

What Sets Facetheory Apart From Other Skincare Brands?

Clean, non-toxic formulations

I’m always looking for ways to minimise my everyday exposure to toxic chemicals, with skincare being no exception. Whilst many chemicals are deemed as ‘safe’ in low doses, ingredients such as parabens, BHT, formaldehyde, phthalates and triclosan (to name just a few) are hormone-disrupting and in some cases even carcinogenic.

The long-term effects of daily exposure to these chemicals are largely unknown, but what we do know is that our skin barrier allows these chemicals to pass through into our bloodstream. As such, no matter the short-term effectiveness of chemical-laden products, I will always give them a wide berth.

Facetheory transparently list all the ingredients you can find in their individual skincare products – as well as all the toxic ingredients you won’t find.

When you can find high-performing natural skincare, there is absolutely no need to put your health at risk.

Quality ingredients at reasonable prices

As Facetheory so rightly put it:

Just because a product is expensive doesn’t mean it works.

Beauty companies use all sorts of vague marketing claims to create hype around their products. But a lot of the time, we’ve really no idea what we’re slathering on our faces.

Facetheory list out all the active ingredients in their products – ones like Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid that are scientifically proven to improve your skin. I love that they champion simple formulations built around hero ingredients, that simulatensouly aren’t going to break the bank.

Vegan & cruelty-free

Not only have Facetheory achieved the highest standard of ethical and sustainable responsibility with their B-Corp certification, but they are also 100% animal-friendly. With Leaping Bunny and PETA approval, you can rest assured that your skincare hasn’t caused any unnecessary suffering.

This is fundamentally important to me when shopping for beauty products.

Beautiful eco packaging

Facetheory are working hard to eliminate single-use plastic from their packaging, with 95% of their products now available in beautiful amber glass jars with aluminium caps or 100% aluminium tubes.

Plus, they keep their delivery packaging to an absolute minimum (whilst ensuring your products are protected) when shipping from their Sheffield HQ, and all of it is biodegradable.

Results!

Whilst my experience has been excellent, don’t just take my word for it! With an average rating of 4.6/5 on Trustpilot (out of 5,373 reviews), Facetheory have got to be doing something right.

“Smooth honest product for my sensitive rosacea skin. I recommend Amil-C Whip M5 SPF 30 good price value.”

“As a loyal customer of Face Theory for over a year now, I can confidently say that their products have transformed my skincare routine.”

“Fantastic company, my whole routine in face theory now, love it! Effective, simple skincare.”

My Final Verdict

I think it goes without saying that I highly recommend Facetheory. Whilst I’m super-impressed with the performance on a personal level, it’s also really important to me that the products I choose are kind to my health, as well as people, planet and animals. Facetheory ticks all of these boxes.

If you’re unsure where to start with your skincare or just want to prioritise a consistent routine, then Facetheory’s basic skincare routine is a solid foundation that you’ll be able to stick with. It’s also very reasonably priced and lasts a long time.

If you have more specific needs that require targeted formulations, then Facetheory offer loads of other bundles that might be more suitable, so do check them out. Here are just a few of the most popular:
